Filming Begins on 'The Avengers,' Chris Evans Wraps Up 'Captain America' & 'Thor' Leaks Early

Cameras starting rolling today on the superhero movie to end all other superhero movies, 'The Avengers.' Director Joss Whedon confirmed the news on Whedonesque, an online community dedicated to the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' creator.

'The Avengers' teams up some of Marvel Comics' biggest names, from Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) to Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his 'Iron Man 2' character, Nick Fury, while Mark Ruffalo replaces Edward Norton as the Incredible Hulk.

The plot of the film is being kept under wraps, but we do know Disney, which bought Paramount out of its distribution deal with Marvel and will release 'The Avengers' as well as 'Iron Man 3,' has big expectations for the $150-million-budgeted film. The Mouse House will kick off the 2012 summer movie season with 'The Avengers' on May 4, 2012.

Whedon brought some humor to his announcement that production was beginning, writing on Whedonesque yesterday:
Hi Pumpkins, joss here.

Tomorrow we start shooting (I THINK I'm legally permitted to say that). Day one. That's right. We'll be shooting the pivotal death/betrayal/product placement/setting up the sequel/coming out scene, at the following address:

[Marvel Lawyers rush in, take Joss's keyboard, blowtorch a picture of his family like in "Stormy Monday," drink his milkshake, leave the seat up, fluff his pillows, violently unfluff his pillows, leave]

Went too far. My bad. Anyhoo, it should be a fun day, followed by the eighty thousand other fun days it will take to finish this. I'll be checking in from time to time, if there's news or I crave attention (i.e. am awake). None of it will be Avengers news -- I have some very denty pillows to remind of that -- but I may have tidbits.
Some key players from Marvel's stable were busy this weekend putting the finishing touches on their stand-alone films before hitting 'The Avengers' set. On Saturday, Evans and Jackson were spotted in New York City's Times Square with director Joe Johnston filming -- or, more likely, doing last-minute reshoots or promo work -- for July's 'Captain America: The First Avenger.'

Meanwhile, a post-credits scene from Marvel's well-reviewed 'Thor' has leaked online. We won't embed it to avoid ruining the scene for anybody (you can see it here, if you want), but before the scene plays, the audience is reminded that "Thor will return in 'The Avengers.'"
