'American Idiot' to Be Made Into a Movie

'American Idiot,' the 2004 Green Day album that gave rise to the Broadway musical of the same name, is about to spawn yet another form of entertainment: a movie.

Universal Studios is in talks to turn the one-act musical into a feature film directed by Michael Meyer, who directed the Broadway show. The screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who recently wrote 'J. Edgar,' the Clint Eastwood movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the controversial FBI head, has been tapped as a possible screenwriter. Black won an Oscar for his script for 'Milk.'

In 'American Idiot,' songs from Green Day's blockbuster album are strung together to tell the story of three angry young men growing up in the suburbs. Producing partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman optioned the show before its opening a year ago. They've had some success with pop-to-musical-to-Hollywood transformations, having previously produced the Universal version of the Broadway musical 'Mama Mia!' based on the songs by Abba.

Justin Bieber, Mark Wahlberg Double-Team a Basketball Movie

According to reports at Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount is in negotiations with Mark Walhberg and Justin Bieber for an untitled drama that will revolve around street basketball.

Both Wahlberg and Bieber are closet basketball players -- Wahlberg regularly has his friends over for full-court action and Bieber has some hoops chops. Apparently Wahlberg saw Bieber play ball in February during a celebrity game held during NBA All-Star Game weekend in which Bieber showed off his court skills. Wahlberg -- who now juggles acting with producing -- subsequently pitched an idea to Paramount executives, who are talking it through in more detail with Bieber's camp, a source told THR.

The tone of the project is described as 'The Color of Money' meets 'The Karate Kid,' according to Deadline.

Lady Gaga says she's channeling late Alexander McQueen

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Lady Gaga says she did not write her latest hit song, "Born This Way," but rather the late British fashion designer Alexander McQueen did so when he channeled it through her from beyond the grave.
Gaga told Harper's Bazaar magazine that McQueen, who committed suicide by hanging on February 11, 2010, "planned the whole thing: Right after he died, I wrote 'Born This Way.' I think he's up in heaven with fashion strings in his hands, marionetting away, planning this whole thing.'"
When the singer's label decided to release the "Born This Way" single on the exact one-year anniversary of McQueen's death, Gaga said it confirmed her belief that the British designer was working through her.
It was not she who wrote the song, Gaga said. "He did!", she told the magazine in an interview for its May edition.

‘Rio’ rocks box office, ‘Scream 4′ bombs

LOS ANGELES – Moviegoers around the world headed to “Rio” for the weekend. The 3D animated misadventure of a Brazilian macaw scored the biggest opening so far this year at the North American box office, and was the top choice overseas for a second weekend, distributor 20th Century Fox said on Sunday.
The film sold an estimated US$40-million worth of tickets across the United States and Canada during the three days beginning April 15, coming in at the top end of expectations.
It also provided some rare good news at the box office where sales so far this year are down 19% to US$2.65-billion, according to box office analysts at Hollywood.com.
The previous best launch this year was the US$38-million bow for the Johnny Depp cartoon “Rango,” which remains the biggest release of 2011 with US$119-million. “Rio” ended the two-week reign of another cartoon, the Easter-themed “Hop.”
Buoyed by strong critical reviews, an “A” rating among patrons polled by tracking firm CinemaScore and the spring break/Easter holiday, “Rio” should have little difficulty becoming the year’s first big blockbuster.
Its foreign haul rose to US$129-million after a US$54-million weekend in 62 markets. (Fox earlier estimated a US$128-million total.) It opened at No. 1 in France, and remained at the top in such markets as Brazil, Mexico, Germany and Spain. Brazil, not surprisingly, is the top market overall with sales to date of US$18.9-million.

Justin Bieber joins Oprah, Korean pop star Rain on Time 100 list

Previously unknown newsmakers from Egypt and Japan joined pop stars and politicians on Time magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in the world, released on Thursday.

The list includes pop culture giants such as Justin Bieber and Oprah Winfrey plus the lesser known Wael Ghonim, an Egyptian Internet activist who helped topple President Hosni Mubarak, and Takeshi Kanno, a Japanese doctor who refused to leave behind victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
“We’ve always, always tried to tell stories through people. … We discovered it was a fantastic way to get people to think about what’s going on all over the world,” said Time deputy managing editor Michael Elliott.
The complete list can be seen on time.com.

World leaders such as British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff populate the list for how they have wielded power.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Plot Synopsis Rise of the Planet of the Apes

An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

The film is a reality-based cautionary tale -- a science fiction/science-fact blend where mankind's hubris leads to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. Oscar(R)-winning visual effects house WETA Digital - employing certain of the groundbreaking technologies developed for "Avatar" - will render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors.

Bumblebee's Dark Of The Moon Character Banner

Above is a brand new character banner for Transformers: Dark of the Moon. It contains Bumblebee, just in case you somehow doubted that the most popular Transformer outside of Optimus would show up in this movie. Why aren’t we showing you a beautiful, high-res version of this poster? Because we aren’t allowed to.

The image was given as an exclusive to Yahoo, where they never show anyone high-res versions of anything. It was given as an exclusive to them because Yahoo Movies is the most popular movie site on the planet, in spite of containing no actual, original content. A testament to what being owned by a big corporation can do for you. If only Halliburton would just swoop in and buy Cinema Blend, we could stop putting in all this effort and just sit back and watch the traffic pour in, like poking a hole in the Exxon Valdez.

Oh you’re probably here about those Transformers. Well Dark of the Moon arrives in theaters on July 1st. You probably saw the date on the poster, though you may have had to squint a little. It’s about Shia LaBeouf fighting in a war with robots while dating a Victoria’s Secret model. Realistic. Should be fun.

While you wait for a high-res version of Bumblebee (we'll get it eventually and post it here), make us feel better about all the work we do, you know, actually writing stuff by browsing some of our best content right here. There's even an article about smoking pot with movie characters. I hear the kids like the pot.
